Cannabinoids and Skin Care

Skin Care

We already know that CBDs show promise in the treatment of many disorders from anxiety to chronic pain, but can CBDs also help solve skin problems like eczema, excessive dryness, signs of aging and acne, to name a few?

Researchers from numerous studies believe that it can. CBDs (short for cannabidiol) have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-aging properties, and the fact that it’s the main ingredient in the skin care oils and creams now available should be reassuring to those seeking more natural active ingredients than the avalanche of chemical preparations that currently dominate the skin care market. CBDs also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which have been shown to provide both moisture and protection from the skin-damaging effects of sunlight.

Common Skin Issues and the Demand for Help

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, some 40-50 million Americans suffer from acne. Most of those 50 million are in their teens and early twenties, but a full 15% of acne sufferers are adults over the age of 24. That’s a staggering number, considering we’re only talking about one of many skin problems such as psoriasis, and eczema (aka atopic dermatitis). When you add in the whole anti-aging market demand, it’s no surprise that the skin care market is booming! Yet despite the proliferation of products out there, people are still looking for answers because despite over-the-top claims, it’s pretty obvious that not everything works for everybody.

The Promise of Topical CBD Preparations

As mentioned, CBD has powerful antioxidant properties. What does that mean in terms of its potential as a skin treatment? Antioxidants help protect skin from free radicals such as UV rays, environmental pollutants and cigarette smoke. When skin is exposed to these sorts of free radicals without some form of protection, it becomes susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. In short, it ages more rapidly than it needs to. (If you’ve ever seen someone — either in person or in photos — who regularly spent a lot of time outdoors, either basking on the beach or working in agriculture or construction, you’ll notice that their skin looks significantly older than people who worked indoors most of their lives or shunned the sun because of their propensity to burn easily.

In addition to their antioxidant properties, CBDs are actually well received by cannabinoid receptors located throughout our skin, giving them the potential to encourage homeostasis and promote healing. This applies to topicals, and also in some cases to ingested CBDs in the form of hemp seed oil, for example, which has been shown to improve eczema symptoms. CBDs have also shown great promise in the treatment of acne, since it has the ability to adjust the output of oil from the sebaceous glands, which contributes to or exacerbates acne. Studies have also shown photo cannabinoids may be helpful in treating allergies manifesting as rashes, as well as other skin diseases.

Because topicals (oils, creams or lotions) are applied directly to problem areas, they’re quickly absorbed and able to go to work where they’re needed most, as opposed to oral medications which enter the bloodstream and take time to effect healing. Topicals provide a more focused, targeted approach to skin problems.

A New Alternative in Skin Care?

It’s encouraging that so many studies are finding such great promise in CBDs in relation to common skin issues, and it’s beginning to look like topical CBD preparations are gearing up to give traditional topical preparations some serious competition in the multi-million dollar skin care industry. There are already numerous hemp oil topicals such as healing balms, sunscreens, moisturizers, and cleansers that millions are adding to their skin care regimens, and reporting positive and encouraging results from.
