Soreness After Yoga: Why You Feel It and How To Ease Discomfort

August 10th, 2020 by Hannah Laing

Soreness After Yoga

Millions of Americans enjoy the benefits of yoga. Doing yoga can increase flexibility, muscle strength and tone, help you lose weight, improve your energy levels, and even reduce stress. It is little wonder that yoga has become so popular in the United States.

Yet anyone who practices yoga knows firsthand the soreness that can often kick in a day or two after trying something new or doing a higher-intensity workout. Home remedies, like massage, a hot or cold bath, and even eating certain foods can relieve this discomfort. Adding CBD to the mix can boost the effectiveness of these remedies, allowing you to feel better — and get back on the mat.

If you’re interested in trying CBD for soreness after yoga, read on to learn more about the latest research on its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits. Armed with this knowledge, you can decide if CBD is right for you — and how best to add it to your routine.

Why Am I Feeling Sore Post-Yoga?

Yoga has a reputation for being a low intensity workout, or even something that can bring you to a state of zen or calmness. While yoga can undoubtedly help you center yourself, it can also be strenuous — especially if you’re just starting or getting back into a routine. Yoga can provide a deep stretch to muscles that you don’t normally use in your everyday routine.

The soreness that you experience after yoga is known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. It usually occurs anywhere from 12 to 48 hours after exercise, and is short-term in nature. The level of soreness that you may feel depends on what type of yoga you are practicing, the intensity of your session, how often you do yoga, and your individual body type.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, DOMS is likely caused by microscopic damage to the muscle fibers that are involved in a particular exercise, leading to inflammation. Any type of activity that causes muscles to length while force is applied — known as eccentric muscle action — may cause DOMS. In addition to muscle soreness, DOMS may lead to swelling of the affected limbs, stiffness of the joint, tenderness to the touch, and a temporary reduction in strength of the affected muscles.

In most cases, DOMS does not require medical treatment. However, certain symptoms, such as dark urine and higher levels of swelling, may indicate a more serious problem and the need for medical prevention.

Soreness after any exercise, including yoga, cannot always be prevented. This is especially true for anyone beginning a new exercise program, pushing themselves a bit further with their current regime, or trying a new type of yoga. Allowing time for muscles to recover and adapt to new stress can help to minimize the severity of soreness and the likelihood of damage to the muscle.

Ways to Reduce Soreness After Yoga

There are a number of ways that you can reduce post-yoga muscle soreness. Many types of home remedies can be useful in alleviating some symptoms of DOMS. While many people rely on over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications like Advil or Aleve, research has shown that these drugs do little to relieve DOMS pain.

A massage between 24 and 72 hours after an intense workout may help to reduce soreness, according to a 2017 review. For most people, getting massages after each workout is cost-prohibitive. Self massages can be helpful, but may not be as effective.

Other options for relieving discomfort after yoga may include:

To boost the effects of these remedies, CBD (cannabidiol) may be useful. CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the hemp plant. It may interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to provide a range of health and wellness benefits.

When it comes to soreness and pain after a workout, CBD may be particularly useful. Research indicates that CBD has strong anti-inflammatory effects. A 2019 review concluded that CBD has both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. Scientists have also determined that CBD may help to relieve chronic pain and reduce inflammation and pain.

A July 2020 review specifically examined how CBD may be used by athletes for sports performance. This paper noted that there is preliminary evidence that CBD has anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, analgesic, and anxiolytic properties, and has the potential to benefit athletes. The authors concluded that more research is necessary to confirm these findings.

If you do decide to incorporate CBD into part of your post-yoga routine, there are many options for doing so. Topicals, such as creams, lotions, or balms, can be applied directly to the affected muscle or joint. A transdermal patch may provide for extended relief, with the CBD released over a period of hours or even days.

Taking CBD orally in a capsule, through a tincture, or in an edible can provide whole body benefits, in addition to boosting your body’s anti-inflammatory response. Generally, tinctures or oils provide the quickest results after being applied under your tongue.

Using home remedies combined with CBD may help to relieve discomfort and soreness after yoga. Experiment with different options, like a cold bath followed by a CBD balm, to find the post-yoga routine that works best for you.

Tried and True: Celebrating National CBD Day

August 6th, 2020 by Cara Oorbeck

Cara blog faceby Cara Oorbeck, Green Well Operations Guru

Those who know me well I would say I am a celebrator of people and events. In fact, my people (family and close friends) know that on their special days, they will be celebrated. We actually go around the room and everyone has to say one thing they love about the person. On Thanksgiving we go around the table and each person says one thing they are truly grateful for at the time. During Christmas and the New Year we reflectively celebrate and acknowledge the goodness in each of our lives! The list of times we celebrate by reflecting as a family is long and celebration is a common occurrence in our house. My children habitually roll their eyes when I ask for cooperation and input during these “reflective celebrations”. This however, does not bother me because I believe it is important to speak out loud what we are celebrating and why! So when preparing for National CBD day, it was only natural for me to write a blog celebrating CBD and our “tried and true” products!

You can go ahead and roll your eyes in solidarity with my kids if you like, but I am going to reflectively celebrate some of our favorite CBD products. There is also a discount at the end of this thoughtful tunnel. That way you, too, can celebrate with your tried and true favorites or try one of ours. So let’s start the list!

Our Tried and True Favorite CBD Products

Endoca Hemp SalveEndoca 750 mg Salve:

If I had to pick one product that I love more than any other that we carry, it would be hard, but this would be at the top of my list. I know the rest of the staff feels this way as well. I use this salve for everything. Stiff neck pain – check, psoriasis on my knees and elbows – check, burn from the oven on my hand – check, poison ivy rash – check, blisters, cuts, eczema and even hotspots for my pup – check, check, and check! Our house is borderline obsessed with this salve. It is one of our strongest salves, packing 750 mg of full spectrum CBD into a 1 oz jar. It has limited ingredients and has worked wonders for me, so my sensitive skin does not break out in a rash while using. If you have not tried it yet, you should. I love this stuff!

Endoca Raw Hemp Oil DropsEndoca Raw 300 or 1500 mg Tincture:

AT GWL, we love the Endoca line and we cannot celebrate our tried and trues without celebrating the Endoca Raw (Full Spectrum)Tincture. Our staff member Hannah swears by this product (Hannah is a young person who was diagnosed with Rheumatoid and Fibro at 16.  Pain is part of her daily life). We tease her that she has an “old lady body”! She says “of all of the products I have tried there are very few products that give me the freedom to live my life as a young person.” This is Hannah’s all time favorite and a part of her daily pain regiment that assists her with everyday living.

Mary's Nutritionals CBD PatchesMary’s 8-12 hour/10 mg Patch:

Patches are an amazing bonus product.I love Mary’s full spectrum patch when I have a headache or a stiff neck. If my back is sore, this is one of my go to’s. I always have patches on hand at home for those days when I overdid it in the lawn or someone I love needs a little relief. I also love the price point at $10.00 a patch. They are a great, latex-free product to aid your body when you are not feeling at the top of your game, especially when traveling and in a pinch.

WYLD CBD GummiesWyld 25 mg/20 pack gummies:

So what’s not to love about gummies? I love candy, so getting my CBD in a candy like form is yummy. The great thing about this gummy is although it may taste like candy, it is made with natural fruit juices and has no added artificial flavors or colors. It’s a healthier alternative to traditional candy gummies. This broad spectrum gummy tastes delicious, is convenient and works well in aiding our bodies with a variety of different things. I have had my 14 year old on these as an athlete for recovery and inflammation and she never grumbles about taking them. I have also watched customers who have family members who struggle with anxiety, autism, and Asperger’s see benefit from this product. Bonus…picky people will take them because they taste good and are THC free so it really is an all around great product. Also my mother in law who will not take anything “yucky” likes these as well!

Treatibles CBD dog chewsTreatibles Treats:

We cannot celebrate our favorite products without mentioning Treatibles Pet Treats for both small and large dogs. We have carried these products since I started working at GWL and they are a staple in my house with my furry rescued friends. Even Molly (my picky Great Dane) loves the blueberry flavor. She is quite the diva – VERY hard to please. I have also seen a significant difference with my 13 year old schnauzer Lucy’s joint mobility and my small anxiety ridden Rizzo. Treatibles treats are a must have in the Oorbeck household for our pets and although we use a tincture for our daily pets’ CBD needs, we always have Treatibles on hand just in case a little extra is needed.

softgels 25 boxMedterra 25 and 50 mg Capsules:

I do not personally take an isolate product. I have old injuries and rely on broad and full spectrums to aid in my body’s functioning. However this high strength, limited ingredient, 0 THC isolate capsule is a favorite amongst many. If you want to try CBD without anything added this is the product for you. It is also easy to take and has an accessible price point. We have many customers who swear by Medterra and it is definitely a go to product around our office.

Lift CBD Sleep dropsLift 1500 mg Sleep Tincture:

So my blog would not be complete without my husband’s favorite product! Mike has been a Pediatric ICU nurse for close to 30 years. He works 12 hour night shifts and has since I have been married to him. This makes sleep a difficult prospect for him at times and he absolutely swears by this product. He takes 50 mg of this tincture before bed and he sleeps like a baby. I too love this product because when he sleeps, he is not grumpy!  I guess you could say that makes it one of my favorites as well!

It is Your Turn; What Are Your Tried And True Faves?

Well there you have it our Tried and Trues! We LOVE CBD and we are happy to celebrate with you on National CBD Day. Don’t miss our Celebration Sale. You can celebrate your favorites or try one of ours. Also feel free to share your favorites on any of our social media sites. You never know – if we know what you love, we just may send you something to celebrate you, too!

CBD For Runners: Pain and Soreness Relief Benefits

July 24th, 2020 by Hannah Laing

CBD For Runners

David Kranker HeadshotBy David Kranker, Op-Ed blogger

Whether you run competitively, to stay in shape, or just for fun, you are likely all-too-familiar with the pain and soreness that often accompanies a long run. There are lots of ways to deal with these issues, like ice, rest, and over-the-counter pain relievers.  But you may be wondering if there is a better option to boost your recovery.

Enter CBD. After the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the industrial production of hemp in the United States, products containing CBD became incredibly popular, including with runners. Many in the trail running and ultramarathon communities quickly integrated CBD into their training regimens.

There is a wide range of claims surrounding CBD and how it can benefit athletes. If you’re like most people, you want to know as much as possible about a product before using it – especially when that product goes on or in your body. Below, we break down the science behind CBD, and how runners may use it to alleviate pain and soreness naturally.

What Exactly Is CBD?

CBD is the common shorthand for cannabidiol, which is one of more than 100 different compounds (known as cannabinoids) found in cannabis. Preliminary research indicates that CBD can boost our bodies’ endocannabinoid system (ECS). Importantly, unlike another cannabinoid, THC, CBD is not psychoactive, which means that you won’t feel high if you ingest it.

The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that has three components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Our bodies produce endocannabinoids as needed in order to bind to receptors located throughout the body. When the endocannabinoids carry out their function, enzymes break them down.

This system is thought to be responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or balance, in the body. Scientific research has associated it with a number of processes, including appetite and digestion, chronic pain, mood, learning and memory, muscle formation, and sleep. Endocannabinoid deficiency may be responsible for certain treatment-resistant syndromes.

It isn’t exactly clear how CBD affects the ECS. However, numerous studies have indicated that CBD may benefit health and wellness. This may be due to the way in which CBD – a type of cannabinoid – interacts with the ECS.

In the United States, CBD is produced from hemp, which is a variety of the cannabis plant. After the hemp is harvested, then the extraction process begins. This involves pushing a solvent through the plant material to pull out the CBD, essential oils, lipids, and other beneficial compounds. The solvent is then removed, leaving an oil that is high in CBD.

Because almost all commercially available forms of CBD are made from industrial hemp, which contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, it is legal in the United States. For competitive athletes, CBD is also permitted. CBD is no longer on the World Anti-Doping Agency or the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s lists of prohibited substances.

Can CBD Really Help Me After a Run?

Runners may use CBD for a variety of reasons, including to improve their sleep or boost their digestion. Many use CBD to aid their recovery after a long run or when training for a race. A number of studies have shown that CBD may help to alleviate pain and soreness.

CBD may help to reduce pain and inflammation by affecting the activity of endocannabinoid receptors.  In one study involving rats, injections of CBD reduced the pain response to surgical incision. A separate study involving rats found that nerve pain and inflammation was significantly reduced by the administration of oral CBD.

Other studies and reviews have found that CBD may be effective in:

While this research is preliminary, it indicates that CBD may be useful for runners, particularly when it comes to the aches and pains that often come during training. As with anything that you take that may affect your health, be sure to talk to your doctor before adding a CBD product to your regimen.

How to Use CBD

If you have made the decision to use CBD, your next question may be the best way to take it or use it. CBD comes in many forms, from tinctures to edibles to topical creams and lotions. The best form for you depends largely on your needs.

For example, if you experience muscle soreness after a particularly lengthy workout, you may want to rub a CBD cream, balm, or transdermal onto the affected area. In this way, you can get targeted relief. Because your skin isn’t as permeable as the membranes in your mouth, you will want to choose a product that has a higher concentration of CBD.

However, if you’re interested in whole-body benefits, a tincture, spray, or oil might be for you. By placing a drop or two under your tongue, the product will absorb quickly, with more CBD preserved because it doesn’t have to go through the digestive tract. Capsules and edibles offer similar whole-body effects, although they won’t start working as quickly as sublingual CBD products.

When choosing a CBD product, focus on items that have been independently tested by a third-party laboratory. CBD products are not currently regulated by the FDA, so this is the best way to know exactly what you are putting in your body. Companies that do independent testing should put the results on their website, or make the results available upon request.

You should also look for CBD products that are made from industrial hemp grown in the United States. This hemp is highly regulated, and cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC. Choosing American-grown hemp can help ensure that you are getting a high-quality product.

CBD For Cyclists: Everything You Need to Know

July 20th, 2020 by David Kranker

CBD For Cyclists

If you’re a cyclist, you know how important the recovery process is to a training schedule. After a long ride, your muscles may be inflamed, swollen and aching. Giving your muscles time to rest and repair can help to reduce soreness, injury, and fatigue.

There are a number of ways that cyclists can recover from grueling rides, such as using compression garments to decrease swelling, engaging in light exercise or even eating and drinking certain foods, like cherry juice. Perhaps the most effective technique is getting enough sleep and taking a break from cycling so that the swelling and inflammation in your muscles reduces slowly. For cyclists, CBD may also be a good supplement to aid in passive recovery.

Preliminary research on CBD has shown that it may be useful in promoting sleep, reducing swelling and inflammation, and relieving pain. Below we will outline the basics about CBD so that you can make a decision for yourself about whether to use it as part of your training process.

What Is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound that is found in the cannabis plant. These compounds are known as cannabinoids. Unlike THC, which is another cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, CBD is not psychoactive and will not produce a feeling of being high.

Our bodies also produce cannabinoids as part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS involves three main components: endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. Endocannabinoids bind to receptors to produce certain effects, such as pain relief. Enzymes then break down endocannabinoids once they have carried out their function.

The ECS is complex, and scientists are still researching how it works. It is generally responsible for homeostasis, or balance, in the body. Studies have linked the ECS to chronic pain, inflammation, appetite and digestion, sleep, muscle formation, bone remodeling and growth, and metabolism.

Experts have not determined exactly how CBD interacts with the ECS. However, research has found that CBD may promote health and wellness in a number of ways, including reducing pain and inflammation, improving sleep, and helping with symptoms of stress and anxiety.

CBD is legal for athletes who compete, including cyclists. Both the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) removed CBD from their lists of prohibited substances, whether in or out of competition. However, only CBD was removed from the prohibited list; THC is still prohibited in competition, along with synthetic cannabinoids.

How Can Cyclists Use CBD?

For cyclists, CBD may be beneficial as part of the recovery process as well as throughout training. Studies have shown that it is generally safe and may be effective in helping athletes with a number of common issues.

As an initial matter, CBD may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation. According to a 2018 review, CBD is effective in overall pain management, without negative side effects. A 2016 study also found that CBD may reduce pain and inflammation when applied topically.

Because CBD can help in reducing pain and inflammation, it may be a good alternative to the medications that athletes often use for this purpose, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil and Aleve. NSAIDs are commonly used by cyclists and other athletes, but research has shown that long-term or frequent use of this medication may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Adding CBD to the mix may allow cyclists to reduce or eliminate the use of NSAIDs for pain and inflammation related to exercise.

Similarly, the use of opioids to treat pain carries a significant risk of addiction and death through overdose. While CBD may not be as effective at relieving acute, high-level pain when compared to opioids, it may be helpful for management of long-term or chronic pain.

CBD may also boost the quality and amount of sleep that you get as an athlete by addressing the root causes of insomnia. Research indicates that CBD improves the symptoms of a particular type of sleep disorder, and may be helpful with excessive daytime sleepiness. It may also lead to better sleep by lowering anxiety and soothing chronic pain.

The Best CBD Products For Cyclists

When it comes to CBD products, there are an overwhelming number of products available on the market. At Green Wellness Life, we sell over 140 products on our website alone. As a cyclist interested in trying CBD for the first time, it can be overwhelming to figure out which product is best to start with.

Social 24 Hour CBD Patch

The Social Isolate (0THC) patch allows cyclists to provide targeted relief to areas in pain with 20mg or 60 mg of CBD. The patch has a timed release that lasts up to 24 hours, so you can continue to feel the relieving effects of CBD for a 34 hour period. Green Wellness sells a 3-pack option, so you can experience the continuous benefit of CBD with a total of 60mg/180mg of CBD and up to 72 hours of use.

Medterra Dissolvable Sleep Tablets

If you’re having trouble properly resting and rehabilitating after strenuous exercise, then Medterra’s Isolate (0THC)dissolvable sleep tablets may be for you. The tablets contain 25mg of CBD per softgel capsule and are infused with 10mg of melatonin. The combination of CBD with melatonin may ensure you get a restful night’s sleep.

Method Organics Water Soluble CBD Tincture

The Method Organics water soluble CBD tincture packs 1,000mg of CBD into a small 30ml bottle. The tincture is very popular for its potency and rapid onset. It may be very helpful for cyclists combating chronic pain or other long-term conditions.

How to Buy CBD For Cyclists

A wide range of CBD products are available to consumers in the United States, from capsules and pills to oils and topical creams and lotions. The way that an individual consumes CBD may affect how — and how quickly — it works. For targeted relief of pain and inflammation, a topical cream may be the best option. For more systemic relief of chronic pain or to help with sleep issues, tinctures, edibles, or capsules are often a better choice.

Using high-quality, safe products is critical to maintaining the gains that you have achieved as an athlete. At Green Wellness Life, we only sell CBD products made from industrial hemp grown in the United States that have been independently tested by a third party lab. While we are not healthcare professionals and cannot diagnose or treat any condition, we are able to offer the latest research on CBD for you to review.

Can CBD Help With Bug Bites & Stings?

June 29th, 2020 by David Kranker

CBD For Bug bites and stings

There are many things to love about summer. The profusion of bugs is not generally one of them. While insects and spiders play an important role in our ecosystem, getting bitten or stung can be painful and annoying.

Traditionally, bug bites and stings have been treated with a range of home remedies — like putting a baking soda paste over a bee sting, icing the affected area, or taking an antihistamine medication to control the itchiness. Of course, each of these methods has its drawbacks, and may not be entirely effective.

If you’re “bugged” by the pain, itchiness or swelling that often accompanies insect bites or stings, CBD may be a good choice for you. Research indicates that when applied topically or taken orally, CBD may help to control these symptoms.

What Happens to Your Body After You’re Bitten by an Insect?

A bite or sting from an insect can be incredibly painful, or simply uncomfortable. Depending on the type of insect, it may even lead to an infection, allergic reaction, serious illness, or death. In most cases, however, a bite or sting will cause relatively minor symptoms.

There are a number of insects and spiders that bite or sting. This includes ticks, mites, bedbugs, fleas, lice, horse flies, mosquitos, black flies, bees, yellow jackets, hornets, fire ants, and wasps.

When a bug bites or stings you, their saliva or the venom that they inject causes an immune system response. For most people, the immediate response is redness and swelling, followed by itching and soreness. Individuals who are sensitive or allergic to an insect’s venom may go into anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening condition.

Common symptoms of a bug bite or sting include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Tingling
  • Numbness

If you experience more serious symptoms that may indicate an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, fainting, or chest pain, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Most bites and stings can be treated with simple, at-home care. This may include removing the stinger from a bee sting, washing the site, and then applying ice and/or an antihistamine cream. In addition, an oral antihistamine, pain reliever, or an anti-inflammatory medication can be taken to reduce itchiness and swelling.

Using CBD for Bug Bites and Stings

CBD — also known as cannabidiol — is a naturally-occurring compound derived from the hemp plant (a type of cannabis). Unlike THC, another cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant, CBD is not psychoactive and won’t get you high. Both THC and CBD interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or balance, in our bodies. It has been linked to a number of processes in our bodies, including skin and nerve function, inflammation, stress, metabolism, and mood. While scientists are still figuring out exactly how CBD interacts with the ECS, preliminary research has indicated that it may produce positive effects related to a number of conditions and symptoms.

As described above, bug bites and stings often cause pain and swelling due to the body’s inflammatory reaction to venom or saliva. Scientists have determined that CBD may help to reduce both pain and inflammation.

A 2018 review found that CBD is effective in pain management, with no negative side effects. A 2016 study involving rats with arthritis, scientists found that applying a CBD gel reduced pain and inflammation in affected joints. Similarly, a 2016 study and a 2015 review found that CBD reduces inflammation in the body.

Research has also shown that CBD can help with a range of skin issues. In 2014, scientists determined that CBD reduces skin inflammation. It may also help people who suffer from psoriasis, acne, dry skin, dermatitis and systemic sclerosis.

In 2006, scientists performed a study on patients with pruritus — the medical term for chronically itchy skin. After the application of topical cannabinoid creams, 14 out of 22 study participants experienced a reduction in itchiness — with an average reduction of 86.4%. This study demonstrates that CBD may be incredibly useful in controlling a primary symptom of bug bites and stings: itchiness.

While this research is still developing, it shows potential for the ability to help the symptoms of bug bites and stings with CBD. With minimal side effects, CBD in topical or oral form may be something to keep around when the pain, swelling and itchiness of bug bites gets to be too much.

Considering CBD? We Can Help.

For most people, being stung or bitten by a bug is a minor inconvenience that results in redness, inflammation, pain and itchiness. But even though these symptoms go away after a few days or a week, it can be hard to not let a bug bite drive you crazy. CBD can help you stop focusing on the bite or sting by alleviating some of the more bothersome symptoms.
