In 2018, a farm bill was passed by Congress and signed into law. This bill legalized the production of industrial hemp, provided that the hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC (the psychoactive component of marijuana). As a result, products containing another compound, cannabidiol (CBD), began to flood the marketplace.
CBD may be marketed in a number of different ways, including as CBD hemp oil. This may cause confusion for many consumers, as a distinct product – hemp seed oil – has been on the marketplace for years. There are a number of differences between the two products, which are important to understand in order to buy the right product to meet your needs.
Whether sold as an oil or in another form, early research has shown that CBD may boost your health and wellness in multiple ways. Read on to learn more about the differences between CBD hemp oil and hemp seed oil – and how you can obtain the maximum benefits from this amazing plant.
What Is Hemp?
Unless you have experience or are a longer-term user of products made from hemp, you may not fully understand how these products are made – or how they differ from marijuana. In most states, using marijuana for recreational purposes is still illegal. How is hemp different?
Hemp belongs to the plant family (genus) Cannabis. There are three different species of Cannabis within the genus Cannabis: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Hemp belongs to the Cannabis sativa species. While hemp can be grown with high concentrations of THC, industrial hemp grown in the United States must contain no more than 0.3% THC.
The hemp that is used to make CBD products is a different variety of Cannabis sativa. It has very low levels of THC, which is the component in marijuana that makes you feel high or stoned. Many CBD products have 0% THC after they are processed but most hemp has at least trace amounts of THC before it is processed.
Hemp can be used to make a number of products, from twine, rope and yarn to burlap and canvas. It can also be used to make recyclable and biodegradable plastics. These products are made from the woody stalks of the hemp plant.
This plant can also be used to make nutritional supplements, such as CBD oil and hemp seed oil. Hemp seeds can also be used to make milk, cooking oils, paints, varnishes and soaps – or even eaten raw when shelled (hemp hearts). The seeds are considered to be a good source of essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, protein, sulfur, potassium, iron, zinc, calcium, fiber, and magnesium.
What Is CBD Hemp Oil?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of hundreds of naturally-occurring compounds (known as cannabinoids) found in the hemp plant. It is extracted from the hemp plant using one of several different processes, including C02, oil, dry ice, solvent, and water/steam. Each of these processes utilizes the stalks, stems, leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. In most cases, the seeds are not used to make CBD products, because there are little to no cannabinoids found in hemp seeds.
The result of the extraction process is CBD, which can then be made into a variety of products, such as edibles, creams, and lotions. In its naturally occurring form, CBD is a paste that may be found in three different forms:
- Green: Green is raw-CBD/CBDA and can be compared to Juicing the hemp plant.
- Blue: Blue is also known as decarboxylated CBD (changing the molecular structure with heat,) which starts to maximize the CBD.
- Gold: Gold is also decarboxylated like Blue, but it is then filtered and refined even further. This last process creates a gold gel with an even higher concentration of CBD.
This paste or gel can be combined with a carrier oil (like hemp seed or MCT oil) and flavors may be added to create a tincture, or oral vitamin supplement. To add to the confusion, CBD tinctures may also be referred to as hemp oil. Many of your full spectrum products are either made from Blue or Gold CBD.
CBD oil has a number of health and wellness benefits. While the research on CBD is still emerging, scientific studies have linked CBD to reduced symptoms of:
Although the research on CBD is still in its preliminary stages, it shows tremendous promise as a way to boost the health of humans and pets alike. In most cases, people purchase CBD oil and other CBD products to improve their overall wellbeing.
What Is Hemp Seed Oil?
As the name implies, hemp seed oil is the oil that is extracted from hemp seeds. In most cases, this is done through a process known as cold pressing. While hemp seed oil can be extracted from all varieties of the Cannabis plant, hemp seed oil that is sold commercially is extracted from industrial hemp that is especially grown for its stalk and seed.
Many people use hemp seed oil because it is healthy, and contains a range of critical nutrients. Hemp seed oil:
- Can be used as a substitute for various cooking oils including olive oil. It is also used in salad dressings.
- Has natural moisturizing properties, which means that you can apply it on your skin after taking a shower.
- Is the base for many types of plastic and can serve as an alternative for petroleum.
- Is a fuel source of biodiesel.
- Is used for the production of environmentally-friendly plants
- Is an important component in a lot of soaps, lotions and other skin care products. This is because hemp seed oil has a lot of omega 3 and omega 6 acids which are crucial for the health of your skin.
- Is an excellent tonic for your hair. This is because hemp seed oil is rich in ceramides. Ceramides help in preventing the loss of excess moisture. As a result, hemp seed oil can highly improve the moisture content in your hair.
- Can also help in boosting your immune system. This is because the oil contains fatty acids, which help in the production of endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids maintain the health of your body’s immune system.
- Contains linoleic acid which also contributes towards decreasing the amount of bad cholesterol and preventing the build-up of saturated fats in your arteries.
While hemp seed oil has a number of uses and benefits, it contains little to no CBD.
What Is the Difference Between CBD Hemp Oil and Hemp Seed Oil?
The main difference between CBD hemp oil and hemp seed oil is the presence of cannabinoids. Generally, hemp seeds have few (if any) cannabinoids. As such, hemp seed oil produced from industrial hemp will not contain cannabinoids like CBD (or THC). Hemp seed oil has high content of omega 3 and omega 6 acids and very low quantity of CBD (the ratio is 25 parts per million or even less).
By contrast, CBD hemp oil is rich in cannabinoids, including up to 0.3% THC. Depending on the purity, product and source of the extract, CBD hemp oil may contain anywhere from 2% to 99.9% CBD. This means that CBD oil has all of the benefits associated with CBD.
While hemp seed oil is great to use in cooking, in beauty products, or simply to add to your diet, it has very different health benefits than CBD hemp oil. In other words, if you are looking for a product to help alleviate your anxiety or reduce pain and inflammation, CBD is a better choice. If you want something that will up your intake of vitamins and minerals, and don’t need the potential health benefits of CBD, you should choose hemp seed oil.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD hemp oil, particularly when shopping through big online retailers (like Amazon), where selling CBD products is forbidden. To get around this restriction, sellers may label CBD oils as hemp oils. If you purchase this type of oil through a site like Amazon, you may or may not actually get CBD oil.
One way to tell the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD hemp oil is by looking at the label. Hemp oil should always list hemp seed oil as its primary or active ingredient. By contrast, CBD hemp oil should list cannabidiol, full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD, or hemp (not hemp seed) as its primary ingredient. CBD almost always will list the milligrams as well. While hemp seed oil does not.
Finally, high quality CBD oils should have a COA, or certificate of analysis. This allows you to visit the manufacturer’s website to view results of independent testing of the product. Because the CBD market is largely unregulated, this is the only way to ensure that the product you are getting actually contains CBD — and contains the quantity of CBD that you want. Hemp seed oil will not have a COA.
