What are CBD Patches?

August 6th, 2017 by Javed Pathan

What Are CBD Patches

If you are interested in trying cannabidiol – more commonly known as CBD – you may be a bit confused about all of the options available. An average store or website selling CBD may offer a range of products, from oils and capsules to edibles and topicals. One popular option for many people as they explore the natural wellness world is CBD patches.

A CBD patch, or transdermal pad, is like a bandaid that contains high potency CBD extract that is released in a controlled fashion over a period of 1 to 4 days, depending on the patch that you choose. The CBD extract enters the body through the skin, which may be more effective than other delivery methods, particularly for targeted relief.

If you’re interested in trying CBD patches for yourself, you can shop online at Green Wellness Life for a range of topical CBD products, including transdermal patches. Keep reading to learn more about how CBD patches work – and how they may help you.

How Are CBD Patches Made?

While CBD patches may all look similar, there are differences from patch to patch and one of the main differences is how the patch is produced. Currently, there are two different types of CBD patches on the market: reservoir patches and matrix patches.

  • Matrix Patches: Matrix patches are composed of multiple layers. There are usually five different layers in a matrix patch. The “matrix” layer is what gives this type of patch its name and it’s the layer that contains the CBD. Outside of the matrix layer, there is also an adhesive layer and protective backing layer. The CBD molecules are transferred from the patch into the capillaries of your skin.
  • Reservoir Patches: Reservoir patches have a protective backing and adhesive layer like matrix patch. However, the way CBD is dispersed from the patch is vastly different. Reservoir patches contain a permeable release membrane that can be fine-tuned to control the CBD delivery rate. This permeable membrane helps the patch to release CBD at a steady, controlled rate.

How Do CBD Patches Work?

The functionality of CBD patches are relatively simple. CBD patches disperse CBD directly into your skin cells. CBD is able to diffuse through skin cells, because it is a lipid, which our skin cells are made up of. After diffusing through the skin, CBD makes its way into the bloodstream where it then begins to interact with various CB2 receptors within the body. Transdermal CBD application via patches can be effective for some but not all when applied to specific areas of inflammation or pain. They can get to work more quickly on specific problem areas rather than consuming CBD, in part because transdermal application avoids the digestive system.

Do CBD Patches Work?

Most CBD products are taken orally, as a drop of tincture under the tongue, in a capsule, or as an edible. CBD patches are applied directly onto your skin, typically in an area that is experiencing pain or inflammation. Here are some examples where our customers have found assistance in localized areas with CBD patches

  • Twist your ankle
  • Head & Neck Ache
  • Back pain: apply to area of soreness
  • Neuropathy in feet
  • Wrist inflammation or pain
  • Knee inflammation or pain

The Benefits of CBD Patches

There are several benefits to using a CBD patch. First and foremost, CBD patches are able to provide targeted relief by releasing CBD directly to the area they are applied to. According to a 2018 review, CBD patches can be as effective as CBD that is taken orally, particularly for pain and inflammation. They also offer several advantages over oral CBD.

  1. Patches get to work more quickly: When you take CBD orally, the CBD is metabolized by your body before it begins circulating in your bloodstream. By contrast, when you use a transdermal patch, the CBD does not have to be metabolized like a product that is orally ingested.
  2. Patches provide a steady release in a target area: CBD patches are also designed to stay on your body for a minimum of 8 hours or longer. This gives you a steady amount of CBD over time, targeting the exact area that you need relief. When you use a CBD patch, you also don’t need to remember to take an oil or apply a cream or salve daily.
  3. Patches last longer than most topicals: Patch products do tend to be longer lasting than anything applied to your skin.
  4. Topical CBD products can help with a wide range of conditions: CBD topicals, like transdermal patches, can be helpful in decreasing pain and inflammation, and reducing nerve pain in localized areas. Topical CBD may also promote muscle relaxation in individuals with chronic pain.

It is important to note that while there are many benefits to using CBD patches, they may not be right for everyone. Some things to keep in mind: People who have sensitive skin may experience skin irritation from the adhesive. Another form of CBD, such as a tincture, may also be more effective if you do not have a specific area that you want to target.

How Do CBD Patches Make You Feel?

CBD affects everyone differently, but it’s often credited for providing a calming effect. CBD tends to have a more slow and subtle onset than medications, but the effects are certainly noticeable. If you use a patch for pain or soreness, you’ll likely notice a steady growing feeling of relief after application. For people that are new to CBD it can take at least five to seven days to see the full benefits of CBD in your body. Often people who have never used CBD or any product made from Hemp or Marijuana plants will not see any benefit until their bodies adjust and figure out what to do with the Cannabinoids from the plant. That means if you are new to CBD patches they may not work right away. You may have to try them for a few days before determining if they are a good fit.

How to Choose a CBD Patch That Is Right for You

If you are interested in trying CBD patches, you may be overwhelmed by the choices available. As an initial matter, the first thing that you should look for is a patch that has been independently tested, with lab results available for your review. Because the FDA does not regulate CBD, this is the only way that you can be assured that you are getting what you pay for when buying a transdermal patch.

Next, look for CBD that is made from industrial hemp. Under current US federal law, hemp must contain no more than 0.3% THC. When you purchase CBD made from American hemp, you can be assured that the CBD that you are getting contains 0.3% or less THC.

CBD comes in three basic forms: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate.

  • Full spectrum CBD contains all of the beneficial compounds found in the hemp plant, including a low amount of THC. It offers the benefit of the entourage effect, which is what your body may experience when taking CBD along with other cannabinoids and flavonoids found in the hemp plant.
  • Broad spectrum CBD contains the same beneficial compounds as full spectrum CBD, but without the THC. In this way, you can take advantage of the entourage effect without any worry that you are getting any THC.
  • CBD isolate only contains CBD, without any other cannabinoids or flavonoids. Often you will need more Isolate CBD to see the same benefits as a full spectrum patch.

Finally, you should look to see the serving size for each patch, and how long it is meant to stay on your body. For example, a patch may contain 10 mg of CBD that is dispensed over 8 to 12 hours. Depending on your symptoms, you may want to purchase a patch with a larger amount of CBD that is dispensed over a longer time frame.

Green Wellness Life offers three CBD patch options:

Remember: before adding any supplement to your diet, including CBD, it is a good idea to check with your doctor.

Patches Vs. Creams & Oils

On the surface, patches may seem very similar to other topical options like creams, balms, and massage oils. However, there is a factor that separates patches from the other topical CBD options. As previously mentioned, reservoir patches have a controlled release mechanism. The effects of CBD cream quickly taper after the cream is absorbed into the skin, but CBD patches will continue to produce the desired effects for hours due to the controlled release.

On average, CBD patches last 24 to 96 hours where other topicals tend to last around 4-6 hours. If you’re looking for a product with a longer duration, then a patch would be better than a different form of topical.

What Are The Side Effects Of CBD Patches?

Unlike many traditional medications, CBD has been found to produce very few side effects. The side effects CBD could produce are extremely mild and include dry mouth and changes in appetite. CBD oil could interact with medications you’re currently taking, which is why it’s important to consult a doctor before adding a CBD supplement to your daily care regimen.

CBD Patch Reviews

Green Wellness Life carries three different CBD patch options. Below is a summary of each patch along with honest reviews from our staff members.

Pure Ratios 96 Hour CBD Patch Review

Pure Ratios Parche de 96 horas de CBD

The Pure Ratios CBD Patch is one of the longest-lasting patches on the market. It disperses 40mg of full spectrum CBD per patch over a period of 96 hours. The Pure Ratios patch is a reservoir patch with a permeable release membrane. So, the release of CBD is steady and controlled over the 96 hour period. The Pure Ratios patch works well for general pain, inflammation, workout/sport recovery, and headaches.

David’s Review

I used the Pure Ratios Patch after putting myself through an intense arm workout. It seemed like the perfect test, because both arms would normally feel an equal amount of soreness after a workout. I applied the patch to one arm to see if I could tell a difference between the two arms. The patch didn’t completely eliminate the soreness in the arm it was applied to, but it did significantly reduce it down to a level that was barely noticeable. The arm without the patch I could barely move and the arm with the patch I could move freely. I would definitely recommend this patch for pain or workout recovery.

Hannah’s Review

When dealing with chronic pain, slipping disks, and the occasional loss of vision, I almost always reach for the Pure Ratios patch. The full spectrum sticker works quickly to bring down the inflammation and tension that often exists in my neck. The weather can have a pretty significant impact on my pain levels and whenever there is a Michigan storm (rain or snow) I love the long lasting relief that I get from the Pure Ratios patch. Fibromyalgia comes in flares and 4 days of consistent relief can make a world of difference in preventing a flare up that the weather would typically bring on.

Mary’s Nutritionals Transdermal CBD Patch Review

Mary's Nutritionals CBD Patches

The Mary’s Nutritionals Transdermal CBD Patch is a full spectrum CBD patch designed to dispense 10mg of CBD out over the course of 8-12 hours. The patch is perfect for those with aches and pains and is often used for general pain, inflammation, workout/sport recovery, and headaches.

Hannah’s Review

I’m a very sensitive person. Whether it be sensitive to temperature, sensitive to pain, or sensitive emotionally–at the end of the day I feel things very intensely. One feeling that I cannot stand is ripping off a bandaid. The adhesive in those little strips has been known to give me a bruise from time to time. When my body hurts and I need something to help me get through the day, but I don’t want strong adhesive to hurt me, I always grab a Mary’s patch. I find that these are the most sensitive, pain-free full spectrum patches that help me in my times of need. When my neck is so sensitive and painful want to be decapitated, Mary’s has my back (literally lol).

David’s Review

I used the Mary’s Nutritional Transdermal patch after building a deck. I had made it my goal to build a floating deck in a day and I was building the entire deck by myself. It was an ambitious project. Doing the leveling work was very hard on my body to be holding up 2×8 beams with my feet and hands while also trying to screw the beams in place. My back was sore before I had even finished building the deck at the end of the day. When I had finished the project, I used the Mary’s patch on my back.

As the night progressed, my back slowly did begin to feel better. The next day, I could really tell the difference the patch had made. My arms and legs were still very sore. I had some slight soreness in my back, but it was not very noticeable compared to the rest of my body. Had the patch not been applied, my back would have likely been just as bad, or worse than my arms and legs. In alleviating a lot of my back soreness, the patch gave me some mobility as my body recovered. I would definitely recommend this patch for pain and workout recovery.

Social CBD Transdermal Patch Review

Social’s CBD patch is an isolate CBD patch. This patch dispenses 60mg of CBD per patch over a period of 12 to 24 hours. Social’s patch is a clear patch that can be easily cut and distributed to different parts of the body if you need relief in more than one area. Isolate CBD can still work to relieve pain and inflammation, but the Social patch really shines when it comes to anxiety relief and mood improvement.

Hannah’s Review

I don’t often have a headache, but when the occasional headache strikes I am down for the count. I’m not sure if it’s the Rheumatoid Arthritis or the Fibromyalgia that makes my headaches so light sensitive, but I often lose my vision or it feels too bright to keep my eyes open. The 60mg Social CBD patch is the strongest patch that we carry and I find that it really helps me when I want a headache to pass. Typically, within an hour of putting on the patch I am back on my feet and running.

David’s Review

I know the Social patches are best known for their ability to help reduce anxiety and improve mood. So, I tried using the social patch during the most stressful time of each month for me. At the beginning of each month I compile marketing reports for our performance. Reporting on performance always stresses me out, regardless of whether the numbers look good or bad.

I used the Social patch on reporting day in the hopes that it would help ease my anxiety. I applied the patch to my spine at the base of my neck. The effects were subtle, but halfway through the day, I did stop to reflect on the fact that I felt less stressed than I was in the morning before applying the patch. Overall, it ended up being an easier reporting day for me to manage than previous reporting days. When it comes to anxiety and stress, the Social CBD Transdermal Patch did work well for me. I do prefer the more Band-Aid-like colors and textures of our other CBD patches, but that’s just a personal preference. The clear adhesive still functioned well and did its job.
